What can we expect to achieve through couples therapy?
In the initial sessions, we will assess your expectations and your goals for the couples therapy. You decide what is most important for you to work on and where you want your relationship to go.
How much couples therapy do we need?
A course of therapy typically lasts 8-20 sessions, but many couples continue for longer.
Do we get assignments between sessions?
I rarely use specific "tasks" for the couple to complete between sessions, as I find this can create unnecessary pressure, potentially leading to conflict. However, I will often ask you to observe and consider, for example, situations and reactions for the next session.
How do we avoid "falling back" into old habits after therapy?
At the end of your couples therapy, the most important thing is that you both feel safe. The aim is that you have learned to understand when and how conflicts between you arise and learned how to deal with them so that they don't escalate. Arranging follow-up sessions after a set period of time can also provide reassurance for the future.
